City of Stamford Haiti Disaster Relief

Message from Mayor Pavia

January 22, 2010

Dear City of Stamford Employees, Stamford Citizens, Institutions and Business Organizations:

The worldwide response to the devastation resulting from last week’s earthquake in Haiti has been heartwarming. People from all corners of the earth have joined together to help the Haitian people recover from this tragedy. Here in Stamford, where so many of our friends and neighbors have had personal losses, there has been a spontaneous outpouring of emotion and offers of assistance.

The City of Stamford is working on many fronts to raise funds, collect clothing, food and medical supplies and provide assistance to citizens and local businesses that want to get involved. Our website will provide information on a regular basis about fund raising and collection activities. We have set up an account at the Stamford Federal Credit Union to receive contributions.

As clear as Haiti’s needs are at the moment, it is equally clear that those needs will persist long into the future. I ask all Stamford employees, citizens, and business and charitable organizations to participate in the effort to bring relief to the Haitian people.

How City Employees Can Contribute

Organizations Aiding in the Relief Effort

Fund Raising Initiatives

  • The Food, Clothing and Supplies committee will be coordinating its efforts with the Stamford Hospital and Hope for Haiti.   We will collect specific items that have been requested by relief organizations as necessary to the Haitian people.  This guarantees that our contributions will really help.  Hope for Haiti will deliver our donations to Haiti and get them to survivors.

Donations can be dropped off in the Social Services Department, 9th floor, Government Center (Ellen Bromley’s or Maria Millan’s office).

Tips For Safe and Efficient Donations

The Federal Bureau of Investigation has urged Internet users to be cautious and do their research before giving money to help the relief effort in Haiti. It is strongly recommended that you review the following FBI website prior to making an Internet donation.
