STAMFORD RECREATION SERVICES
TAE KWON DO
Tae Kwon Do has become an increasingly popular program for Stamford Recreation Services over the last eight years. The program started in 2000 with ten children and has grown to over 60 kids ranging in ages from 6 to 12 years old. Team Wrigley Tae Kwon Do is taught safely with traditional values.
The program is more than just learning to defend yourself; it is about teaching respect for all things, giving children the positive influence and self confidence they will need to be successful at any thing they do, and of course to have fun. Tim Wrigley is the 4th degree black belt instructor of the entire Tae Kwon Do program. He has been involved in Tae Kwon Do since 1990 and is planning to go for his 5th degree black belt in November.
Stamford Recreation Services offers a beginner class and an intermediate class, and the children are separated by belt levels. Tim Wrigley says: “We reached a significant milestone this past June. Three students who started out as white belts years ago, obtained the black belt.” Tae Kwon Do is taught twice a week at Westover School and runs throughout the school year. When asked about the best part of the program, Tim said: “When students realize that Tae Kwon Do is a lot more that just kicks, blocks and punches. Throughout the training and classes they learn how to get ahead in life, even at a young age.”
Tae Kwon Do is one of many programs that Stamford Recreation Services offers for children that builds many intangible life skills such as self confidence, personal responsibility and positive values. Check out our website at www.stamfordrecreation.com for information about them all!
