MAYOR'S YOUTH SERVICE BUREAU
CITY KIDS' ADVENTURES
The 2008 City Kids’ Adventures Camp was an enormous success this summer. City Kids’ Adventures is one of the many programs offered by the Mayor’s Youth Services Bureau. Over 130 campers from every neighborhood in Stamford joined us at J.M. Wright Tech for seven weeks. Our summer day camp’s mission is simple: provide Stamford’s youth with opportunities to challenge themselves, learn new skills, explore their creative talents, and make new friends.
There was something for everyone this summer. We worked very hard to be able to provide our campers with a wide variety of activities. Some activities were familiar whereas others offered campers a chance to try something totally new and exciting. This summer, City Kids’ Adventures offered culinary arts, auto body, art, dance, drama, cheerleading, t-shirt design, swimming, sports, a game room, ropes course activities, rock climbing, hiking, backpacking, mountain biking, and canoeing. We explored places close to home such as Holly Pond and Mianus Park. However, some of our activities took us away from Stamford. We hiked and camped on the Appalachian Trail in Salisbury, CT and learned how to rock climb on Green Wall cliff in Farmington. Whether our campers were making monkey bread in the kitchen or hiking in Pound Ridge, the goal of our activities is to promote creativity, confidence, curiosity, and teamwork.
In response to the camp’s success and our campers’ interest in our adventure activities, we are pleased to announce the start of the City Kids’ Adventure Club. The Adventure Club is open to any camper who attended this past summer and will meet two Saturdays per month throughout the school year. This fall, campers will have the opportunity to continue challenging themselves at the ropes course, take a rock climbing trip to Kent, CT, and learn how to use a map and compass on a day hike up Bear Mountain. As the days grow short and temperatures drop, we will continue into the winter months with snowshoeing, Nordic skiing and winter hiking.
