STAMFORD - THE CITY THAT WORKS SAFELY

The City of Stamford and Board of Education experienced the best safety record during fiscal year 2007/2008 than they had in the past 19 years.  Much of the improvement can be attributed to increased safety awareness, increased participation in safety committees, and safety training participation.  2206 employees participated in safety training last year; we are working towards reaching each and every employee during this fiscal year!

For the past several months the focus of safety training within the City of Stamford and Board of Education has been reducing slip, trip, and fall injuries.  The reason for this:  Of the 563 injuries City of Stamford employees sustained last year, 158 of them were due to slips, trips, and falls.  But slips, trips, and falls are suffered by more than just employees. Each year over a million people suffer an injury due to a slip, trip, or fall.  These are easily preventable accidents.  The basics covered during employee slip, trip, and fall prevention training may help you avoid injury too.  The following excerpts from the employee training are easy to follow steps towards improving your safety awareness:

What can you do to avoid slipping?  Take your time, pay attention, and don’t block your vision when carrying things.

What can you do to avoid tripping?  Provide sufficient lighting in your home; keep cords, hoses, etc. out of your walking path.  Always watch where you are walking, no matter where you are.

Fall Prevention:  Use stairs safely!  Use handrails, walk – don’t run.  Be aware of slippery surfaces or damaged steps.  Don’t put objects on the steps, and don’t skip steps.

Footwear:  Pay special attention to what you wear on your feet. Many accidents are caused by wearing inappropriate footwear for the conditions in which you walk.  When possible, carry your shoes and wear slip resistant boots on snow and ice.  Watch for black ice in parking lots and on sidewalks.

Most of all:  if you pay attention to your surroundings, look before you step, you may just prevent an injury of your own.
