2007 LEAF PICK-UP PROGRAM

In preparation for the 2007 Fall Leaf Pick-Up Program, the Office of Operations Public Services Bureau would like to inform the residents of the City of Stamford of this year’s schedule and approach.

Background: Historically, the Highway Department has started the Leaf Pick-Up Program on or around November 13th. Crews worked the Northern section of the City and preceded South, collecting leaves from each and every city street, completing the program within 4 to 6 weeks.

Approach:

The 2007 Program will begin on Tuesday, November 13, 2007 in North Stamford (above the Merritt Parkway) and work south. We will be following the same procedure and routes as in the previous years. However, due to reductions to our budget for leaf pick-up, we will be taking steps to minimize overtime during this process. This may limit our ability to overcome unforeseen delays such as inclement weather and mechanical breakdowns, without changes to the schedule. In addition, should the City get hit with a major snowstorm prior to completion, leaf pick-up may be temporarily postponed until there appears to be a significant break in the weather.

Schedule: The collection of leaves will commence on November 13th in Area 1, which is north of the Merritt Parkway. Area 2 will commence on or near November 19th, which is between the Merritt Parkway and I-95. Area 3, made up of City neighbors below I-95, will commence on or near November 26th and should be completed by December 7th or as long as necessary due to inclement weather.

Important Reminders:

· Please put leaves out no earlier than a few days before the start date for your designated area.

· City crews will not return if leaves are not out by the start date for your designated area.

· Only loose leaves or leaves in paper leaf bags will be picked up. Residents can bring bagged leaves to the recycling centers on Magee Avenue and Scofieldtown Road, as well. Residents may check the City’s website www.cityofstamford.org for operation hours.

· Leaves must be brought to the curb.

· No brush, grass clippings or bulky waste will be picked up. If these materials are found at curb side they will not be collected. Owners of the adjacent properties can be cited or fined for leaving any unacceptable materials curbside.

· Whenever possible, place your leaves in wooded areas of your property where they will naturally compost.

· Do not cover curbs, irrigation pipes, sprinklers, fire hydrants and water boxes with leaves.

· Do not pile leaves near stone walls, fences or trees where they could be damaged by heavy equipment removing the leaves.
