SOLID WASTE

RECYCLING PROGRAM

This past winter the City of Stamford’s Office of Operations Solid Waste Division introduced several brand new recycling trucks purchased by the City as part of a major restructuring of its recycling and solid waste programs. These changes, including switching from an outside contractor to City staff for recycling collections, as well as a switch from backyard garbage collection to semi-automated curbside collection, began in July, prompted by budget action last spring.

The new recycling trucks arrived last December. They allow for the collection of both the blue and gray bins at the same time. Their design also allows for manual dumping of residential bins into troughs along either side of the trucks as well as for semi-automated tipping of larger containers, which are used at schools, condominiums, and City facilities.

The new trucks are an important part of our plan to significantly increase recycling in Stamford. It is our goal to increase our recycling rate to 40%. To succeed we need to make recycling as convenient and cost effective as possible. With these trucks we can collect more materials from more locations.

In addition to being environmentally friendly, it pays to recycle:

  • Each ton of garbage costs the City $69 to send to a landfill.
  • We avoid $500,000 per year now in disposal costs and we only recycle 8% of our total residential waste.

  • When the City meets the Mayor’s goal of recycling 40% of our waste, we will save an additional $1.9 million.
  • The market for recycled paper and plastic is strong, with Connecticut firms offering between $10 and $15 per ton. At that price, Stamford could see as much as $480,000 in revenue from the sale of recycled material.
  • When we meet the Mayor’s goal we will save nearly $3 million in taxes each year by recycling. The cost of collecting recycling is about $1.5 million each year now.
  • To further encourage recycling, please consider this - last year the amount of energy saved from recycling aluminum and steel cans, plastic PET and glass containers, newsprint and corrugated packaging was equivalent to: the amount of electricity consumed by 17.8 million Americans in one year; 29% of nuclear electricity generation in the U.S. in one year; 7.9% of electricity generation from fossil fuels in the U.S. in one year; 11% of energy produced by coal-fired power plants in the U.S.; the energy supplied from 2.7% of imported barrels of crude oil into the U.S.; and the amount of gasoline used in almost 11 million passenger automobiles in one year. Other recycling initiatives we have implemented or planned to help us accomplish the 40% goal include:

    • Increasing recycling in the Government Center from about 1,200 lbs. per year to 2,000 lbs. by adding container recycling and encouraging public and employee participation.
    • Developing a permanent drop-off site for electronics and some household hazardous wastes at the Mygatt Recycling Center.
    • Adding new recycling containers in parks and schools that are compatible with our new trucks and that will add capacity at those locations.
    • Working with new housing developments to ensure that they have ample recycling capacity available for residents.

Recycling is a partnership between citizens and local government. Please join us in our efforts.
