“Mentor: Someone whose hindsight can become your foresight”

This page is for youth and young adults looking for information about the S.T.A.M.P. mentorship program. For the Mentors and Adults page, please click here.

S.T.A.M.P., or the Stamford Mentoring Partnership was established in the fall of 2005.  It is a   collaborative of the following community based organizations under the direction of the Mayor’s Youth Service   Bureau in Stamford, CT. The partners have worked collaboratively to create a mentoring program to benefit all the youth served within these organizations, ages five to eighteen.

S.T.A.M.P’s vision is to provide a mentor to every young person in Stamford who wants one. This could mean you!

So now, of course, you’re just dying to ask:

What’s a Mentor, and Why Would I Want One?

The official line:
“Mentoring is a relationship that brings young people together with caring individuals who offer guidance, support and encouragement aimed at developing the competence and character of the mentee.”

What that really means:
A mentor is not a parent or a teacher or a social worker. A mentor is someone you can talk to. What you talk about is up to you, but a mentor is someone who cares about you and is there to help you out when you need some advice, a push in the right direction, or just someone to listen.

How Do I Get Started?

Whether you know you want to get a piece of this, or if you just have some questions, all you have to do is get in touch with the Mayor’s Youth Services Bureau.  Give us a call at 203-977-0830, or shoot us an email at mlappas@ci.stamford.ct.us. That’s all!

What Do I Have to Do?

Once you get matched up with your mentor, you’ll be meet up for an hour each week at a place of your choosing. The Stamford Government Center, the Ferguson Library, the Boys and Girls Club, or your school will all be available for your meetings. Your mentor will sign up to be there for you for at least a year. If you and your mentor get along, you can keep meeting for as long as you want.
