Water Pollution Control Authority
Purpose Of Wastewater Treatment The sole purpose of the treatment plant is to remove and properly dispose of pollutants in the wastewater by the most practical and economic means, and then disinfect the wastewater before it is discharged to the receiving water. The State of Connecticut requires the Stamford treatment plant to discharge no greater than 20 mg/L of pollutants measured as biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and total suspended solids (TSS). The Stamford plant achieves an extremely high level of treatment. The yearly average discharge of TSS is 10 mg/L and BOD is 6 mg/L. The Stamford Water Pollution Control Facility (SWPCA) is considered one of the best treatment facilities in the Connecticut. In 1995, EPA named the Stamford plant the best large, advanced wastewater treatment plant in the United States. |
