Traffic Engineering: LED Signals

The latest significant technological improvement in the traffic signals area is the usage of Light Emitting Diode (LED) bulbs instead of incandescent bulbs for vehicular and pedestrian signal heads.

The LED signal is a cheaper, brighter, energy saving light bulb with increased visibility even during inclement weather conditions and has a longer life compared to signals using incandescent bulbs.

Currently, in the City of Stamford, traditional signals are being replaced with LED signals as part of various ongoing projects. The Division's policy is to use LED signals when upgrading or at any new signal installation.

Significant savings in energy and maintenance costs is the result.
