Spring Cleanup
The highway crew put down tons of sand and salt. Removing all that material prevents damage to people and property, and it is also good for the environment.
The Highway Department has machines called street sweepers. Working in conjunction with water trucks, that help keep the dust down during sweeping, City crews run the sweepers over every mile of city road.

Mosquito Control
Highway assists the Health Department in mosquito control. Health concerns like the West Nile virus make it necessary to drop repellants into standing water areas such as catch basins where mosquitoes breed. Highway forces perform this task for the Health Department, ensuring a lower level of breeding areas for the carriers of so many illnesses.

Emergency Summer Storm Response
During the warmer seasons, especially the summertime, fierce thunderstorms with high winds and driving rains can cause heavy damage. Fallen trees block the roadways, water floods the streets and fires caused by downed wires and lightening strikes all create a dangerous environment.
The Highway Department opens up blocked roads for emergency response, cuts up trees, works with the utility companies and assists in evacuation of endangered areas, such as residential areas on the sound.

Snow And Ice Removal
Snow and Ice Removal in the City of Stamford is no small task. It could be snowing up on High Ridge Road by the Merritt Parkway, icing north of I-95, and raining down by the Canal. Planning for winter storm events begins the year before, and includes budgetary evaluation, historical trends and expenditures, and learning from the previous years.
The Snow Response and Removal Plan is evaluated each year, adjusted as needed, and published for public consumption. Snow Emergency Routes are maintained in order to ensure that emergency response teams are able to move through the city with as little difficulty as possible.
