Graffiti Removal

PROMPT REMOVAL OF THE GRAFFITI IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT

The vandal will not receive the recognition they desire which discourages a repeat offense.

The longer the product is on the surface the more difficult it will be to remove it. The product will not have a chance to seep into the material, set up onto it or harden. Like a stain on a rug or clothing, it’s best to get to it quick before it sets in.

THINGS TO CONSIDER

  • With any products or equipment that will be used for this process always use caution and read the manufacturer’s instructions.

  • During the removal phase of the project those involved may need protective clothing, possibly a respirator, eye protection, and any other safety equipment recommended.

  • Be aware of any water or run-off drains on your site when using a removal method that may be harmful to the environment.

  • Start with products and methods that cause the least amount of damage to your surface and work your way up the treatment line until the graffiti is gone.

  • Always test a small sample area for its reaction to the method or product.

  • Contact or hire a professional if you have concerns that relate to a Historic Building, the value of the surface, unstable materials, or a dangerous location on the building or structure.

IDENTIFY THE SURFACE

Different products and methods will be used for the removal of the graffiti considering the surface it is on.

THE SURFACE

In general, if the surface is painted the graffiti should be removed and repaint the area. If the surface is unpainted or unprotected use a removal method which is least harmful to the material

THE METHOD

Paint Over: use a stain-killing primer if the graffiti bleeds through, avoid

patchwork, and color match to the original color.

Sanding: can be used on bare wood or metals.

Chemical

Removers: involves the use of a solvent or chemical to dissolve the graffiti.

Pressure

Washing: for delicate masonry use 500 PSI or less and for general cleaning use 500-1500 PSI. It is also recommended to use a Fan-type nozzle at 15-50 degree.

THE MATERIAL

Wood: if sealed, wipe with mineral spirits, if unprotected, power-wash low or sand.

Masonry: power-wash below 700 PSI or use a chemical remover / graffiti removal product.

Metal: use a common paint thinner, sand, or use a graffiti removal product.

Vinyl or

Plastic: wipe with a penetrating oil (WD-40 or Three-in-One) or a light rub with an ultra fine steel wool.

Glass: scrape with a razor blade.
