The areas of Stamford that are not covered by the Stamford Fire & Rescue Department are served by the volunteer departments which have come to be called "The Big Five". The volunteer departments are functionally independent though they receive City funding and are under the limited purview of the Office of Public Safety, Health & Welfare.
Per Charter, the organization, status or property of the Volunteer Departments of Stamford cannot be changed by the City. The City does, however, have the power to make changes to the Fire Service Districts which are indicated on the map of the Fire Service Districts prepared by the City Engineer and dated January 21, 1977. This map is on file in the Office of the Town and City Clerk and shows the boundaries of the regular and Volunteer Fire Departments.
Changes in Fire Service Districts may be made by ordinance adopted by a two-thirds' vote of the total membership of the Board of Representatives with the advice of the City Fire and Rescue Chief and the respective Chief of the Volunteer Fire Department affected. |
