Dear Nurse Bonnie:
I thought I was 5’3” but my doctor measured me and I am now 5’1”. I am 74 years old. Why am I shrinking?
Mrs. CJ Dear Mrs. C.J.,
I do hope you will discuss this with your physician. Chances are you have some compression of your spine due to osteoporeosis. After menopause, bone density can decrease and cause a loss of height and a greater risk for fractures.
It is my belief that all women over the age of 65 should have a Bone Mineral Density (BMD) test. The best kind to have is with the tapletop machine that measures bone density in both your spine and your hips. It gives your doctor a “T” score. T score of 0 to –1 is normal -1 to –2.5 osteopenia –2.5 or lower is osteoporeosis. Screenings that measure just a wrist or finger are not adequate for diagnosis.
Bone density can be increased with certain prescription medication such as Fosamax or Evista. A recent study found that red clover derived isoflavone supplement had a protective effect on the lumbar spine. Calcium 1000-1200mg taken with 400mg Vitamin D can have a preventive effect against further bone loss. The body requires the vitamin D to absorb the calcium and it is best taken in capsule form and in divided doses throughout the day. Adequate walking and weight bearing exercises promote bone density….and of course, dietary calcium (dairy products, broccoli).
Osteoporeosis increases risk of bone fractures. Tai Chi will improve balance, having eyesight corrected for visual acuity and depth perception and a home safety check, removing wires, throw rugs can also help to prevent falls and fractures.
