Water Conservation

There are a Number of Ways to Save Water...

And They All Begin
With You!

To help save water, the Stamford Health Department urges residents to implement the following conservation measures:
  • Turn off water while shaving and brushing teeth.
  • Have all leaky faucets and toilets repaired.
  • Use low flow shower heads and water conserving toilets.
  • While showering or washing hair, turn off water while lathering.
  • Do not overfill the bathtub.
  • A full tub holds 50 gallons of water, a lot more than many might need for bathing.
  • Use a water level selector for washing clothes or wash only full loads.
  • Wash only full loads of dishes in the dishwasher.
  • Do not allow your water to run while rinsing dishes that are washed by hand.
  • Do not wash cars during a water emergency.

Water Facts:

  • About 3% of the Earth's water is fresh and about three-fourths of that is in the Artic icecaps and glaciers.
  • A person takes in about 16,000 gallons of water in his or her lifetime.
  • Each person in the United States uses about 100 gallons of water every day.
  • It takes about 80 gallons of water to make paper for one Sunday newspaper.
