I WAS BITTEN BY A TICK AND STILL HAVE IT. WHAT CAN I DO TO HAVE IT TESTED? Stamford resident may bring ticks to the Stamford Health Department to be tested for spirochetes that cause Lyme disease.
There are two labs where you can have the us send your tick for testing. The Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station (CAES): Will identify all ticks, but will only test ticks that have ingested human blood for the presence of the Lyme disease bacterium. There is no charge for this service. The turn around time is between 3 to 6 weeks.
The Connecticut Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory: Will identify and test all ticks submitted. There is a $35.00 charge for this service; they will bill you. Results are available 4 to 5 business days after they receive the tick. If the organism that causes Lyme disease is found in the tick you submitted, you will be called with the result. A written report will be sent for all ticks submitted describing the species of tick, stage of development, and the degree of engorgement (an indication of approximately how long the tick has been feeding). If they were tested or not able to be tested for the bacteria that causes Lyme disease and what that result was. For questions regarding Lyme Disease and submitting ticks to be tested, call (203) 977-5842. The following information has been prepared from more than 10,000 submissions to the Stamford Health Department's Tick Program Since 1989. |
