	The Office of Public Safety, Health and Welfare oversees all areas related to the physical and overall well being of Stamford's residents and taxpayers. The Director of Public Safety, Health and Welfare is the head of the Office of Public Safety, Health and Welfare and is responsible for the administration, supervision and performance of all municipal functions related to police, fire, health, social services, rescue, emergency medical service and emergency management. The Director of Public Safety, Health and Welfare is responsible for the supervision of the activities of the Chief of Police and the Fire and Rescue Chief, and, unless otherwise prohibited by state law, for the coordination of the functions of the City Fire and Rescue Department and the Volunteer Fire Departments of Stamford and the Office of Emergency Management. The Director of Public Safety, Health and Welfare, to the extent permitted by state law, is also responsible for the supervision of the activities of the Health Director. The Director of Public Safety, Health and Welfare is also responsible for the administration of social service functions including, but not limited to, public assistance programs.
